When you go to college, you will most likely have a roommate, and most people get along with their roommates just fine. I started off my year with a new roommate and she is a Chinese international student.
Everything was going fantastic, especially because she knew I had a crazy work schedule but then little things began to affect me that I hadn’t noticed before.
First, she somehow creates a flood in our bathroom every day. There’s a towel on the floor for a reason and there’s something called a shower curtain. Does she take a shower with the curtain open? I step into the bathroom and the floor is soaked.
This semester, her little ticks started annoying me even more because my work schedule is even more hectic and I have to go to sleep earlier. She has a random knocking sound that comes from her laptop every two seconds and sometimes it’ll be going off and she’s not even in the room and I’m trying to get in bed.
Her typing also annoys me. She has two keyboards and she seems to use the bigger and noisier one during the times I need to sleep, the days I work at 4 a.m. Oh, and don’t let me forget her chewing.
I don’t know if all Chinese people do this but she chews with her mouth open. Yes, open, smacking like a cow. And when you’re lying in bed in silence and then you hear a mushy or crunchy noise, it’s going to sound louder than it really is.
But before her chewing even begins I hear her knocking the plates and utensils around as she prepares food. I’m just lying there in bed, trying my hardest to get some kind of sleep. People wonder why I’m always crabby, try living with my roommate.
She seems to never lock our door either. If I go to sleep before she does, I usually wake up before her too and when I go to leave, the door is still unlocked. Yes, we live on-campus, in a very safe area but I still lock the door when I go to sleep.
I actually locked the door yesterday while I took a nap in the middle of the day because I knew that even if she wasn’t there, her friends, other Chinese students, would try to come over and they knock once and then walk in. And while I napped, I heard knocks and then heard them try to open the door and failed.
I can’t wait for the year to end and I don’t have to deal with her anymore, and hopefully I’ll be a Resident Assistant next year, meaning, no roommate at all.
